Woz's Words of Wisdom

September 30, 2008
A new article at BBC News By Maggie Shiels.
It Begins:
"The co-founder of one of the world's iconic companies is a reluctant billionaire who wanted to be an engineer first and a boss last.
The man in question is Steve Wozniak, the designer of the first Apple computer and its successor in his spare time.
He learned basic electronics from his father and knew by the time he was at high school that he wanted to be an engineer for life."

Apple Power CD, Complete & Mint w/Box
From the description:
"Apple's first 'portable' music player! This Apple Power CD is totally complete with box, remote, ac adaptor, battery pack, SCSI cable, RCA cables, drivers (on 3.5" floppy) and a collection of CD-ROM's in an Apple branded sleeve.
I'm the second owner, and I've kept it in the box unused for years. The unit and all interior parts look completely brand new and untouched. The box does show some wear. I powered the unit up and it played a cd. I did not hook it up to speakers or test the remote. I'm convinced everything is in great condition, but due to the age of the product, I must sell it as-is".

'Founders at Work' Chronicles the American Idols of Startups

September 25, 2008
Published September 24, 2008 in Knowledge@W.P. Carey,
"Tim Brady, founder of Yahoo ... Mitch Kapor, founder of Lotus Development ... Max Levchin, founder of PayPal ... Steve Wozniak, founder of Apple. All are legends in the technology world. We know their ideas were successful because we use their products every day.
But once upon a time, they were ordinary people. Where did they get their 'big ideas'? How did they muster the confidence to convince investors to back them? What made them overcome incredible odds to become rich and successful? In short, what was it like in the very early days of their startup businesses -- when no one knew their names?
'Founders at Work: Stories of Startups' Early Days' offers answers to these questions and more. Author Jessica Livingston is a founding partner at Y Combinator, a seed-stage venture firm and organizer of Startup School. Thanks to her research and interviews with 32 startup founders of successful technology firms, we have an amazing glimpse of the earliest days of startups that have become part of today's business lexicon.

Old 1986 Apple Computer Employee Shirt, Star Wars Spoof
From the description:
"ONE (1) Vintage 1986 Apple Computer Employee Shirt. This shirt was an employee only item, and never sold to the general public. The design is a spoof of the Star Wars Movie 'The Empire Strikes Back', in this case 'The Southeast Strikes Back'. Tagged Size 'Large'. By the look of the colar shape, this may be a womens shirt. The t-shirt is used, but in good condition as shown. The printing on the shirt has some wear (as shown). Previous owner was a smoker & so the shirt has a light odor which has been fading with time. Bonus! Also included is the red fabric bag shown from the same conference, also an Apple Employee only item. The bag folds down into the little pouch. Printing on the outside of the pouch is ok, with some minor losses. Larger printing on expanded bag has losses as shown. These items are sold 'as-is' (no returns). This would make a nice addition to your valuable collection."

Take It or Leave It?

September 18, 2008
Today we return to the magical Wayback Machine at Archive.org to retrieve another lost nugget. This 1996 article by John Rizzo, subtitled "Tips from a seasoned PowerBook wanderer", is originally from Creative Mac.
It begins:
"Traveling with a PowerBook is like traveling with a small child: You have to carry a lot of extra gear and you can expect temperamental behavior.
I've dragged PowerBooks through airports foreign and domestic, struggled with presentation slides in cramped seats, and squinted over word-processed notes at dimly lit conferences. I've even dragged a PowerBook on vacations 'just to check my e-mail.' Yeah, right."

Jef Raskin's Apple II From IAI with Swyft Card Custom
From the description:
"This is the personal Apple II of Jef Raskin used at Information Appliance in developing the highly acclaimed and much studied Swyft and Canon Cat 'Work Processor' software. The two Apple keys and space bar have been changed in size to allow "Leap" keys. The unit includes Jef's SwyftCard firmware and key labels. The wood palmrest is the prototype for a patent. Note the hole as a carry handle. By the way, it all works. This represents a unique development in the history of personal computing and human interface design. The late Jef Raskin was the creator of the Macintosh project at Apple and the author of 'The Humane Interface'. If you are looking here out of curiosity, a quick google search will turn up many items and interviews. This computer is among those pictured at the digital museum site and the Raskin Center. The Swyft/Cat interface was first developed and tested on the Apple II and worked so well that it became a product -- the SwyftCard or Swyftware. If desired, I can include a boxed Swyftcard with tutorial disk and manual with new keyboard labels. Like all the developer's Apples at IAI, the lid of the case was soon discarded due to the need to swap cards or run diagnostic cables. This computer comes with a System II monitor stand with power and key as well as Jef's dual joysticks used with is simulator for RC aircraft -- he was an award winning RC acrobatic flyer. Jef's desk copies of a couple of manuals for graphics tablets and graphics software are included. You hear the once in a lifetime opportunity on eBay too often. However, this is a one-of-a-kind system designed and owned by a great inventor and visionary of the modern computer age who left us all too soon. I was privileged to work for him at the time but have no place to keep all my memorabilia. This computer needs a good home with someone who appreciates it as the artifact it is."

Larry's Original Review of the Macintosh

September 11, 2008
This review of the Original 128k Macintosh by Lawrence J. Magid from January 29, 1984 originally appeared in Los Angeles Times. An interesting read! It begins:
"I rarely get excited over a new computer. But Apple's Macintosh, officially introduced last Tuesday, has started a fever in Silicon Valley that's hard not to catch. My symptoms started when I talked with some devotees from Apple and the various companies that produce software, hardware and literature to enhance the new computer. By the time I got my hands on the little computer and its omni-present mouse, I was hooked. Apple has a winner.
The Mac, which retails for $2495 is about 14 inches tall and takes up about the same amount of desk space as a piece of 8 1/2 x 11 paper. It is smaller and lighter than most of the so called 'portable' machines. The entire system can be slipped into an optional ($99) padded carrying case to be hoisted over your shoulder or placed under an airline seat. The case and computer together weigh 22 pounds."
