Cult of Mac Exclusive: Surprise! Apple I Buyer is a “PC”

October 28, 2009
A new article at Cult of Mac by Nicole Martinelli.
It begins:
"On October 3, a collector bought a rare Apple 1 on eBay for $18,000. The computer, one of about 50 thought to be still in existence, had an estimated value of $14,000 – $16,000.
Back in July 1976, the Apple I sold for $666.66; there were 200 of them hand made by Steve Wozniak. Sold in a kit, it came with 4KB standard memory, you could bump up to 8KB or 48KB with expansion cards. You had to add your own case, keyboard and display. (If you’d like to see one, check out the Smithsonian.)
The seller of this Apple 1, Monroe Postman, wasn’t even sure if it would still work.
So, who would pay $18,000 for an Apple I?"

Apple Newton MessagePad in Box with 2MB Flash Card
From the description:
"For sale, one Apple Newton Messagepad, in the original box. (Sold as is, but see note below)
Amazing Apple item from long ago, sold a bit ahead of their time.

You get:
MessagePad (original model, 1993) as H0093LL/A (H1000?) in nice shape, with new batteries, leather case, one stylus.

With:
Stickers
Video
Manuals, Quickstarts, etc
Power supply

Cards:
Getting Started Card
Forbes 500 Card (1993)
2mb Flash Memory Card
No Card in Slot Card (placeholder)

Touch screen is above average compared to some I've seen listed at times, almost as new I'd say, but there is one tiny nick, and some nearly invisible scratches. Looks nice, works nice during testing. See pictures.

Batteries:
New Lithium 3v backup battery, CR2032
New (qty 4) Alkaline AAA cell main batteries

Read: Vintage items of this age are subject to the effects of battery leakage at some point during their lifetimes. This item was stored with the batteries long ago, and there was some leakage from one. I cleaned things up carefully to a good result before replacing with the new ones, and testing. However there is still some cosmetic imperfection inside the battery compartment (discoloration upon a metal surface mostly, some on the plastic). See picture, which makes it look worse than it looks in person. The plastic battery replacement sticker inside is also without its adhesive due to age, and floats inside.

Box is in fair shape, with some nicks and wear and tear."

Apple Interactive Television Box - 1995 Set-Top Rarity!
From the description:
"The Apple Interactive Television Box was a set-top box developed by Apple Computer (now Apple Inc.) in partnership with a number of national telecommunications firms, including British Telecom and Belgacom amongst others. Prototypes of the unit were tested in parts of the United States and Europe from 1994 to 1995, but the product was cancelled shortly thereafter, and was never mass produced or marketed.

The set-top box was designed as an interface between a consumer and an interactive television service. The unit's remote control would allow a user to choose what content would be shown on a connected television, as well as to provide functions of fast forward, rewind and so on. In this regard it is similar to a modern satellite receiver or TiVo unit. Unlike the TiVo, the STB would only pass along the user's choices to a central content server instead of issuing content itself. There were also plans for game shows, educational material for children and other forms of content made possible by the interactive qualities of the device.

This one looks like a late pre-production example, in very good shape, and with excellent fit and finish. Apple collectors treasure these things - here's your chance to add one to your collection or to just mess around with. The user manual is available for download online, by the way. It measures 11" x 15.5" x 2.5" and looks pretty cool. No reserve. Own the ancestor of AppleTV!"

Twentieth Anniversary Macintosh TAM Immaculate
From the description:
"ABOUT THE TWENTIETH ANNIVERSARY MAC: Although officially produced in celebration of the Twentieth Anniversary of Apple, the 20th Anniversary Mac (often abbreviated “TAM”) was released close to a year after the fact, in late Spring, 1997. And a truly unique Mac it was. Apple stated – “The Twentieth Anniversary Macintosh represents a unique celebration of Apple’s twentieth birthday commemorating 20 years of engineering for excellence as well as ease of use. It’s a very special, limited-edition Macintosh system that offers a glimpse of the future, while paying tribute to the triumphs of past Apple efforts.”

The Motherboard was similar to that of the PowerMac 5500, and it was based on the same 603e processor, running at 250 MHz. The real innovation of the 20th Anniversary Mac was its unique shape, and advanced sound and video features. Upon unveiling, the TAM was predicted to cost somewhere between $10,000 and $9500, which would include a direct-to-door concierge delivery service. Upon release, it was $7,499. In the middle of its sales’ lifespan it dropped further to around $3,500, and finally upon its discontinuation on March 14, 1998 the price was set to a low $1,995 – either at or below the cost of production.

HERE’S WHAT YOU GET: Original owner TAM with Keyboard, Italian Leather Palm-Rests and Trackpad, “Base Unit” with Bose Sound System, Power Cord & All the Original Extras! Original Pen & Pencil Set, Remote Control with Leather Case (with New Batteries), Ethernet Adapter (not Standard), Sonnet Technologies Crescendo G3 Upgrade Card (not Standard & Installed – See Photos), Original “Hunchback” Cover, Kingston Technology EtheRx PCI 10/100 Fast Ethernet Adapter User’s Guide – Model: KNE100TX (unopened), Original Twentieth Anniversary Macintosh Owners Manual, Original Service and Support Guide, One of the Original Boxes with 3 insert trays, Apple Stickers and Leather CD Case with all Original Disks are also included.

Disks: Twentieth Anniversary Macintosh System Software, Twentieth Anniversary Macintosh Welcome Tour, Twentieth Anniversary Macintosh QuickTime Showcase, Virtual Pool with Original Instruction Manual, Special Edition Compact Disc from Bose – (Artists: Bach, Thom Rotella Band, Patti Austin, Joe Morello Quartet, Glenn Miller Orchestra, Mozart, Jay Leonhart, Chuck Loeb & Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach Chamber Orchestra), Drive Setup 1.3.1, Mac OS8, Sonnet Kingston Ethernet Software (Extra Freebie from Me!).

CONDITION: You probably won’t find another TAM with a better pedigree selling on the internet today. As I mentioned, I’m the original owner of this machine. It was purchased along with a mate in 1998 where it was used in my ad agency. More of a “Showpiece” than a “Workhorse.” My day-to-day work was done on another Mac and eventually (a year later) the Anniversary Mac was brought home. As you can see, this computer is clean and only has some very slight blemishes. It’s sat on a desk in my home office for the past 10 years and has only been used sporadically. There are no rough patches in the material that covers the side panels or speakers as commonly found on most TAM’s for sale today. I can promise you it was well taken care of. The remote control is the only piece that has had an issue in the entire time I’ve owned this machine. 4 or 5 years ago the batteries leaked, but after a thorough cleaning everything was as good as new again. The only other minor thing worth mentioning, the pen and pencil set have become “sticky” to the touch – something weird with the type of rubber material they are made of. And last, the power cord has a very slight separation between the cord and the main body of the computer (evidently a design flaw in the TAM). I hate to see my favorite Mac of all time go, but it’s time for someone else to worship the TAM. Our starting price is low and our reserve is very down-to-earth. Be sure to check out the other great items we have listed including other Macintosh related items."
